Iván Orlín Ariza is a violinist and instrumentalist born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1996.
Iván Orlín is interested and involved in a wide range of musical styles and genres, including traditional Colombian and Latin American music, jazz fusion, funk and metal, among others, and is an inveterate improviser and enthusiast of improvisation sessions of all kinds. On violin and other instruments, he is a member of the Latin-American music ensemble CHAO Ensamble, and with his violin-flute duo Duo Montjuic with Daniel Guerrero in Lausanne, Switzerland. On drums, he plays in his personal project “X Lilithae” and in his progressive hard rock duo “Mod Morass” with singer and bassist Ollie Ivarsson in Berlin, Germany.
Since 2023, Iván Orlín is an active student of Prof. Sergey Malov, in the Master Soloist Program at the Zurcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHDK) in Zurich, Switzerland.
VIOLIN
Iván Orlín started playing the violin at the age of four motivated by his parents and family jam sessions, and inspired by classical and colombian folk music.
Iván Orlín won the national competition for young talent organised by the Cali Philharmonic Orchestra (Colombia), in 2010 at the age of fourteen, performing Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, conducted by Maestro Paul Dury. He was then selected by the Colombian National Symphony Music Association to perform the same concerto in 2011 with the Colombian National Symphony Orchestra in Bogota, under Maestro Adrián Chamorro. In August 2012, performed Camille Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso with the Batuta Young Symphony Orchestra in Bogotá, Colombia, conducted by Maestro Ricardo Jaramillo.
Iván Orlín has received violin masterclasses from Edvard Grach, Vadim Gluzman, Adrián Chamorro, Pavel Vernikov, Gordan Nikolic, Bartosz Bryla, Joseph Swensen, Lars Bjørnkjær, Nila Perrou, Gilles Apap, Ivry Gitlis, Ilya Kaler, Itzhak Perlman and Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
STUDIES
- Between 2004 and 2010, he studied in the youth programme at the Conservatory of Music of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (National University of Colombia).
- From 2008 to 2012, he continued his violin studies as a disciple of Colombian violinist and conductor Adrián Chamorro, and has continued with him since 2009 at the Universidad Central in Bogotá, Colombia.
- From 2012 to 2014, he studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía (ESMRS) in Madrid, Spain, in the violin class of Prof. Marco Rizzi.
- From 2014 to 2016, he studied at the Universität der Künste (UDK) in Berlin, Germany, in the class of Prof. Mo Yi.
- In 2019, he begun his Bachelor studies in violin at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU), with Profs. Svetlana Makarova and Julien Zufferey, and after graduating in 2021, he continued his Master studies with Prof. Svetlana Makarova until 2022 and Prof. Gyula Stuller and obtained his diploma in 2023.
- Since 2023, Iván Orlín is an active student of Prof. Sergey Malov, in the Master Soloist Program at the Zurcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHDK) in Zurich, Switzerland.
- As a drummer, he began his formal training in 2016 at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) in Berlin, Germany, in the Bachelor program, where he studied drums with Profs. Randy Black, Tim Kroker and Budgie Clarke, graduating in 2019.
ORCHESTRA
As an orchestral musician, Iván Orlín has performed and toured with orchestras such as the Orkester Norden in Aalborg, Denmark, the Berliner Symphoniker in Berlin, Germany, and the Abraxas Ensemle in Lausanne, Switzerland.
